This is a confusing term for many people new to rum but it looks like we’re stuck with it. One must remember that the proof of rum only indicates the amount of alcohol by volume it contains. It is not an indication in any sense of flavor. This category contains many types of rums with a variety of flavors. A general rule of thumb is rums that are around 55% ABV or higher are called “overproof,” though this is just a very loosely defined term. To make things more confusing, the color of rum is not an indication of age or flavor so one has to dig deeper. Three main sub-categories are the most common: Demerara 151, Jamaican, and multi-island blends often called “navy strength.”
