Green Chartreuse
The recipe for Chartreuse has a long history dating back to the 17th century and perhaps much earlier than that. It was touted as being an elixir of long life. Carthusian monks started making the secret concoction in the very early 18th century. It’s packed with more than 130 flavor-filled herbs and its slight sweetness is a remarkable way to bring depth and balance to a cocktail. It’s one of the most complexly flavored liqueurs available and while it’s direct and to the point, it does this while also being quite nuanced. Green Chartreuse comes in at 55% ABV so it packs a wallop. Its iconic green color comes from the chlorophyll from the herbs used in its production. Because of its one of a kind greatness, it’s tough to find something able to fill its shoes. Some will use Dolin Génépy le Chamois liqueur as a substitute though it comes in at a lower ABV and has a mellower flavor.
