Falernum

Originating in Barbados, falernum is a sweetener that adds a multi-spiced element to cocktails, especially those of the tiki and tropical variety. The spice mix is going to vary from brand to brand, but traditionally leans towards that of clove, ginger, lime zest and bitter almonds. The earliest published instance of falernum dates to the very end of the 19th century. There are alcoholic and syrup-based varieties available but we stick to the alcohol-based variety since that’s how it was made originally before refrigeration was widely available. There are recipes for making it homemade available online.
