The color of rum, such as dark or light, is largely irrelevant. It isn’t an indication of age or flavor. The color is often achieved by additives at least as often as it is from barrel aging. Many light-colored rums are older and more robustly flavored than darker ones. The reason this category exists here is because cocktail recipes often call for a “Dark Rum” and we’re left figuring out what to use. If no other details such as country of origin are specified, then one has to consider the flavor profile of the other ingredients and pair it with a rum variety that works.
